RAJ RAI
ARTIST
My work is an experiential diary.

It’s an instinctive, sometimes inarticulate record of who I am, how I’m feeling, or simply where I am in my life at a particular moment.  I have a need to make things, to draw, to paint, to use my hands and see what happens.  It’s my world and I guard it jealously.

I think it’s worth mentioning that I rarely know what I’m going to do when I approach a blank piece of paper, and I quite like it that way. I don’t want to repeat or become a replicator of my own work. I want each piece to come from wherever I happen to be at the time.

No plan, no expectation.

The work is inconsistent, which is an accurate reflection my own inconsistency as a human being.
Sometimes the work feels personal, complicated and perhaps difficult to access. At other times it’s much more immediate, playful or decorative. I don’t feel the need to make everything mean something, or to have a consistent message running through it all.

I approach colour and materials quite freely, often without knowing exactly where I’m heading. The work develops as I go. I change the work and the work changes me.

The one thing that does remain consistent is the desire to keep going — to turn up at the studio, pick something up and make something. This work is a record of my existence. It’s not always deliberate or particularly articulate, but it’s honest.
